Who We Are

Goldclipper

We design and develop data-focused solutions, consult on technology, and manage and run tech implementations. Our projects often involve complex application landscapes, and the majority of our work is in the customer data, CRM, and/or sales & marketing spaces.

Our clients are typically household names or else names that are less well-known to the general public but are still big in their fields.

A good deal of our development work has been bespoke development for clients; in some cases we have then supported the system, and in other cases handed it over to in-house teams for them to support.

We also provide a lot of skill augmentation to teams within larger consultancies, usually in design-lead or tech-lead roles. Recently, we have been working on a CRM tech stack renewal project for a major online retailer and a marketing database project for a major energy supplier.

Two of the distinguishing features of Goldclipper are that we really enjoy what we do and that we typically have very long relationships with our clients. Those two features are very likely related to each other.

Meet The Directors

Jamie Hepburn, Director

Getting your data foundations right doesn't guarantee success, but getting them wrong is a pretty sure sign of impending failure. Delivering the former rather than the latter has been the basis of my career for the past 30 years or so, and the vast majority of my time is spent dealing with customer data, and the associated solutions. If that sounds like the data version of Groundhog Day, I can assure you that it isn't. The difference between developing a solution for a B2B company with about 30,000 active customers as opposed to a primarily B2C company with 130M accounts is pretty significant.

I bring a lot of passion and interest to the party, but the key skills are listening and communicating. I love how multi-faceted and varied data problems are, and likewise the solutions: communicating them may involve a cramped room with a whiteboard, and handful of my peers - or an online meeting with dozens of attendees and inevitable connectivity problems. In fact, presenting a data model might well be my favourite thing... at work, anyway. But it's more than an intellectual challenge: solving that problem means that you are going to make a difference to people in the real world.

John Walsh, Director

I've worked in IT for over 30 years now... long enough to remember punch cards and magnetic tapes, a techie but not a dinosaur. Most of my career has been working with data, lots of data, primarily using Oracle databases and tools. I've had a number of roles: sysadmin, dba but mainly developer in a variety of environments using wide variety of tools and languages. The last few years have seen me working more with apps and databases hosted in the cloud (Oracle and AWS).

I do my best to pass on my skills and work ethic to those I work with and manage. Going the extra mile, attention to detail and customer satisfaction are high on my agenda and that of any project I've worked on for Goldclipper. Oh and I love problem solving, there's nothing quite like conquering a knotty problem, especially when I know it will be to the benefit of our customers.

Jon Underwood, Director

My career commenced with eight invaluable years as a CRM consultant, which allowed me to work with a broad range of companies and to develop an understanding of what makes a company tick. I saw a number of successful CRM implementations in those early days, but also some failures. From early on, it was obvious that the greatest challenge faced by the sector is people - and that technology is less of a problem, despite what is often assumed. The result of this challenge can be misunderstood objectives, unrealistic expectations, missed opportunities, and ultimately deliveries that miss targets, wasting both time and resource. The primary driver of my career has been to ensure that these failure points are mitigated from the outset. I achieve this through open and honest dialogue, excellence in planning, high-quality analysis, continual business engagement, and a complete, dedicated focus on delivering business value.

I have maintained this approach throughout my career. Including my work at a global telco, where I was the Director of Customer platforms, in charge of 500+ resources, responsible for delivering technical solutions for a £16M portfolio of CRM, and customer-facing systems, as well as through my freelance career that led me to Goldclipper, where a like-minded team asked me to join them as a fellow Director, in 2021.
